Abstract
This paper identifies those stages of river and coastal engineering pr ojects where expenditure on environmental issues might be necessary. I t reviews the types of measures which may be appropriate and, using ca se studies, provides an order-of-magnitude indication of the costs (an d benefits) of accommodating environmental needs.
