Abstract
Spot-size transformers based on buried two-layer InP/InGaAsP waveguide s with differently shaped lateral tapers for the efficient interconnec tion of semiconductor optoelectronic devices to single-mode fibers hav e been fabricated and investigated. Using antireflection coating on th e chip side and a dispersion-shifted fiber, a total insertion loss bet ween the small spot chip waveguide into the fiber of only 0.5 dB was a chieved for an optimized nonlinear taper.
