The linear expansion and thermo-optic coefficients of a bacteriorhodop
sin film were measured by using an interferometric method, The experim
ental results confirm the previous suspicions that the large refractiv
e nonlinearity which occurs at high illumination intensities arises fo
rm a thermal effect. The results also suggest a possible way to increa
se the usable thermal nonlinearity by four times.
