Abstract
We examine the characteristics of the microspherical cavities and the associated whispering gallery modes with a view to study the optical c haracteristics of atoms in such cavities. In particular we report resu lts on the renormalized response functions due to (a) very large enhan cements of the internal fields and (b) the exceptionally large value o f Q associated with certain chosen modes.
