Electrochemical oxidation of metal anodes (copper and nickel) in aceto
nitrile solutions of Schiff bases (H(2)L) (synthesized from salicylald
ehydes and 2-aminophenols) gave Cut and Nit complexes. When I;IO-phena
nthroline (phen) or 2,2'-bipyridine (bipy) was added to the electrolyt
ic cell, the mixed complexes CuLL' and NiLL' (L' = phen or bipy) were
obtained. The crystal structure of 1,10-phenanthroline {2-[(2-oxypheny
l)iminomethyl]phenolate}copper(II) was determined by X-ray diffraction
. The structure consists of-monomeric molecules in which the copper at
om has a distorted square-pyramidal CuN3O2 kernel.
