Abstract
The interface strength of TiN coatings on hardened high-speed steel su bstrates is investigated for the presence of Ti interlayers. The hollo w cathode are discharge coated samples are evaluated by the recently i ntroduced differential load feed (DLF) analysis of load-indentation me asurements as well as by scratch tests. The highest critical loads of the scratch experiments are determined for the absence of interlayers and evaluate to 62 N. DLF analysis proves the existence of the two-lay er systems. Correlations to the scratch test results are obtained if t he deformation of the interlayer is considered as part of the total in terface deformation.
