The following paper describes a method to determine the visual impact
of objects on the landscape. It integrates computer graphics, image sy
nthesis and analysis, and is adapted to the problem of overhead lines.
Two ways of visual assessment are combined using a three-dimensional
model of the scenery as a basis. First, quantitative measurements for
visibility and camouflage are defined, taking into account the physica
l aspects of the environment and the physiology of the human eye. Algo
rithms for the evaluation are proposed. Second, the paper describes a
technique for rendering realistic images of the planned overhead line
in the landscape. Some examples, taken from an application, demonstrat
e the results of the method.
