P. Bowen et al., CYCLIC CRACK-GROWTH IN TITANIUM ALUMINIDES, Materials science & engineering. A, Structural materials: properties, microstructure and processing, 193, 1995, pp. 443-456
Micromechanisms of fatigue crack growth have been studied in specific
Ti3Al-based aluminides and TiAl-based aluminides. Effects of test temp
erature, environment and microstructure on fatigue crack growth resist
ance are considered. For both intermetallic systems brittle mechanisms
of crack extension are observed at room temperature, and such mechani
sms persist in the TiAl-based aluminides considered to a test temperat
ure of 800 degrees C. The implications of such observations for the en
gineering application of these materials are addressed briefly.
