Enthalpic pairwise interaction parameters, h(jj), were determined by t
itration calorimetry at 25 degrees C for dilute solutions of glycerol,
D-threitol, mannitol, and D-glucitol in water. The parameters for the
se and other polyols conform to the expression h(jj) (J-kg(-1)) = 145
+ 135n(OH) - 21.5n(OH)(2) - 41.7n(dl)(2) - 160.5n(dlld), where n(OH) =
n(C) is the number of hydroxyl groups (carbon atoms), n(dl) is the nu
mber of dl configuration of a vicinal pair of OH-groups, and n(dlld) i
s the number of such configurations in the polyol molecules. A rationa
lization of this expression is given.
