This study investigated the relationship between the 17 Predictor and
3 Potential scores of London House's STEP Battery and several measures
of managerial success. A sample of 575 employees of a medium sized co
rporation were administered the STEP for the Line Management Hierarchy
in conjunction with a number of HR selection and development processe
s within the company. Both stepwise regression and various MANOVA's we
re completed to determine the degree to which the STEP correlates with
or is related to managerial success as defined by position level and
salary at the time of administration. It was found that six of the 17
STEP predictor variables accounted for about 50% of the variance in po
sition level and salary. Significant, positive relationships were also
found between the 3 potential scores and both position level and sala
ry. Additionally, the impact of race and sex on the STEP scores was ex
amined. When the effects of salary and position level were statistical
ly controlled, no main effects for sex or race were found to reach sta
tistical significance for the 20 STEP scores.
