An analysis of the problem of local scour downstream of hydraulic stru
ctures is presented here. This paper briefly discusses the functional
design of the bed protection downstream of large hydraulic structures.
Phases of the scour process and transport mechanism are treated in an
introductory manner. Subsequently, semiempirical relations for the ma
ximum scour depth of clear-water scour (scour with no sediment flux fr
om upstream) and the stability analysis of scour slopes upstream are d
iscussed. The proposed equations are verified with prototype data.
