Simple(CuO2, CuO) and complex superconducting (YBa2Cu3O7-x, La2-xSrxCu
O4) copper oxides have been investigated by Cu-61(Ni-61) emission Moss
bauer spectroscopy. A linear relationship between the quadrupole coupl
ing constant for Ni-61 and the calculated lattice electric held gradie
nts is established, and the contribution of the Ni2+ valence electrons
to the coupling constant is determined. Magnetic fields are observed
at Ni-61 nuclei in those cases when the copper sublattice shows magnet
ic ordering.
