We calculate the dissociation yield and harmonic generation spectrum e
mitted from the hydrogen molecular ion subjected to ultrashort pulses
of intense laser radiation. We present results for pulses of peak inte
nsity I = 10(12)-10(14) W cm(-2) for light of wavelengths 1064 and 248
nm. The emission spectrum obtained from the ground and excited vibrat
ional states is discussed. We note the presence of stabilization reson
ances in the photodissociation yield. These long-lived laser-induced s
tates lead to sharp intense spectral lines for low-order harmonics. We
find that, at the higher intensities considered, a very steep pulse p
rofile enhances high-frequency harmonic generation from this system.
