P. Kurpick et al., MULTIPLE VACANCY K-L-TRANSFER IN ION-SOLID TARGET COLLISIONS, Journal of physics. B, Atomic molecular and optical physics, 28(5), 1995, pp. 27-31
Over the last decade several measurements on the K-L vacancy transfer
in many-electron heavy ion-solid target collision systems were perform
ed, although a theoretical ab initio understanding of these collisions
has still not been achieved. In this letter we present the first calc
ulations based on the solution of the time-dependent relativistic Dira
c-Fock-Slater equation to both evaluate the mean excitation and ioniza
tion of the projectile M- and L-shell, and to calculate the later tran
sfer of these L vacancies to the K-shell. We found that all L-shell va
cancies contribute to K-shell vacancy production. Comparision with exp
erimental measurements carried out by Schuch et al for 10 MeV Si3+ on
Al shows that these so-called solid target effects on impact-parameter
-dependent charge transfer probabilities can be explained within the f
ramework of our ab initio method.
