Abstract
A simplified formula for the dispersion limit of single-mode-fiber Int ensity Modulation/Direct Detection (IM/DD) systems is derived for arbi trary given normalized pulse width U, eye opening penalty X and source linewidth enhancement factor alpha. From the comparison with publishe d theoretical analyses, computer simulation and experimental data, its validity and the limits of existing formulae are shown. Using this si mple and general formula, one can easily obtain the dispersion limit o f various fiber types under different working conditions in IM/DD syst ems.
