H. Steinruck, THE PASSING OF RESONANCE ZONES OF A PISTON IN A CLOSED TUBE, Zeitschrift fur angewandte Mathematik und Mechanik, 75(3), 1995, pp. 223-232
An inviscid gas in a tube closed at one end is excited by a piston osc
illating around a slowly changing mean position. The response of the g
as is considered when the piston passes a resonance zone, that is when
the eigenfrequency (as a function of the mean position) of the gas in
the tube is close to the frequency of the oscillation. Employing an a
symptotic analysis with respect to small Mach numbers of the piston it
is shown how shocks evolve and decay again as the piston passes the r
esonance zone.
