F. Roblot et al., DATURA-STRAMONIUM POISONING - DIAGNOSIS A ND TREATMENT ARE BASED ON CLINICAL SYMPTOMS, La Revue de medecine interne, 16(3), 1995, pp. 187-190
Datura stramonium is a hallucinogenic plant found in urban or rural ar
eas. it contains three main toxic alkaloids: atropine, scopolamine, an
d hyosciamine. Consumption of any part of the plant can result in seve
re anticholinergic toxicity. Clinical symptoms are those seen in atrop
ine poisoning, particularly hallucinations and mydriasis. Prognostic i
s good in this study. Patients always require hospitalisation because
of agitated behavior. Symptomatic treatment is efficient. Clinicians s
hould be aware of the potential abuse of botanicals such as jimson wee
d to avoid excessive investigations.
