This research investigates the effect of colloidal particles on the pr
eparation of ordered mesoporous materials (M41S). It demonstrates that
colloidal silica and colloidal titania particles promote the formatio
n of these materials. Under similar conditions no ordered structure is
observed without the colloidal particles. A heterogeneous nucleation
mechanism is proposed based on these observations and is supported by
direct evidence from transmission electron microscopy (TEM).
