Nosocomial pneumonia is a relatively common disease attended by consid
erable morbidity and mortality. Recent research has focused on possibl
e means of prophylaxis (such as selective decontamination of the diges
tive tract), diagnosis (including bronchoscopic methods), and therapy
(for example, monotherapy versus combination therapy) for this potenti
ally devastating condition. These findings and their practical implica
tions are the focus of this review.
