The authors present a case of a young girl who developed scleromalacia
after she had been hit in her eye by a pine cone. Neither past ocular
insult, nor any medication taken on a regular basis were reported. On
medical workup, no systemic disease or any sign of such a disease was
found. In the absence of known predisposing factors for scleromalacia
, the authors suggest the trauma as being the only reason for the deve
lopment of scleromalacia and discuss possible mechanisms for this proc
ess.
