ON 2-PARAMETER FAMILIES OF SYMMETRICAL MATRICES

Let f be a homogeneous polynomial mapping of degree d from C-2 into th e space of complex n x n symmetric matrices. It is shown that if rank f(x) = k for all 0 not equal x is an element of C-2, then either k is even or d is even.
