Abstract
This paper is concerned with the measurement and subsequent analysis o f acoustic emission (AE) signals obtained during the unlubricated slid ing wear testing of steel and silicon nitride surfaces. SEM and micros copic examination of the worn surfaces confirm that AE rms signals can detect different wear processes occurring during these tests. Consequ ently, acoustic emission monitoring offers a novel method for studying the complex wear mechanisms that exist between loaded surfaces in rel ative motion.
