The aim of this paper is to present and examine critically, perspectiv
es regarding the impact of industrialization on Chinese marriage and f
amily as presented by the mainland scholars and family workers at the
Fourth National Conference on Chinese Marriage and Family in Market Ec
onomy, Guangzhou, People's Republic of China, 6-8 January 1994. The in
fluence of Chinese culture and history on the interpretation of the im
pact of industrialization on marriage and family is discussed. Some an
alogies are drawn between the Chinese perspective on the impact of ind
ustrialization on marriage and the family and the perspectives develop
ed in postindustrial Europe and North America.
