A spinning-sample-magnetic-alignment method has been used to align fin
e-powdered ( < 20 mu m) Y3Fe27.4Ti1.6. A nearly perfect magnetic align
ment was confirmed by X-ray diffraction on magnetically-aligned sample
. The easy magnetization direction of Y3Fe27.4Ti1.6 is determined to b
e within the (204) plane and has an angle of 60 degrees to the c-axis.
The anisotropy field H-A of Y3Fe27.4Ti1.6 was determined, from 4.2 K
to the Curie temperature, directly on the magnetically-aligned sample
by using the SPD technique in a pulsed field magnetometer. The Curie t
emperature of the Y3Fe27.4Ti1.6 was determined by measuring the temper
ature dependence of the ac susceptibility from 300 to 800 K. The prese
nce of a small amount of a Y(Fe,Ti)(12) phase in the Y3Fe27.4Ti1.6 sam
ple is traced by susceptibility measurements.
