Abstract
The exact formulas for the zero-field splitting of the (4)A ground sta te of d(3,7) ions in the orthorhombic field are derived on the basis o f the complete diagonalization procedure (CDP). The formulas obtained are suitable for both the strong octahedral Cr3+ and the weak tetrahed ral Co2+ complexes. As an illustration, the formulas have been applied to the specific example of Co2+ ions in Cs2CoCl4. Calculations indica te that the optical and EPR spectra of Co2+ ions in Cs2CoCl4 can be in terpreted uniformly.
