X-ray photoelectron spectra of the valence band and Fe 2p3/2 and 3s co
re levels have been measured for the amorphous and crystalline phases
of Fe-B alloys. The 3s-multiplet splitting has been used to estimate t
he local magnetic moment on the Fe atoms. To explain the observed conc
entration dependence of the magnetic moment, calculations of the elect
ronic structure, the magnetic moment of the Fe atoms, and the stabilit
y of the ferromagnetic state have been performed. Results of the calcu
lations agree with experimental data and give an explanation for the d
eviation of the concentration dependence of the magnetic moment from t
hat of the Slater-Pauling curve.
