M. Wahner et al., RELATIONS BETWEEN THE MUSCLE-FAT-GROWTH A ND 17-BETA-ESTRADIOL-PROGESTERONE-CONCENTRATION OVULATION POTENCY AND REPRODUCTION PERFORMANCE INGILTS, Archiv fur Tierzucht, 38(2), 1995, pp. 187-197
At 95 mature female pigs with different muscle-fat-relation (LSQ) the
17 beta-estradiol and progesterone were analyzed by radioimmunoassay (
RIA) in follicular fluid, m. glutaeus medius and backfat. Samples were
taken after slaughtering. The ovaries and follicles were inspected. I
n second part of research in 136 gilts the correlation between the mus
cle fat-relation and reproductive performance were analyzed. Gilts wit
h some more fat in their body have higher concentrations of 17 beta-es
tradiol in follicular fluid and in fat. Especially in prooestrous/oest
rus a positive correlation is found between muscle-fat-relation and ho
rmone concentration. A correlation not exist between body fat and prog
esterone concentrations in muscle and follicular fluid. Gilts with som
e more backfat show a higher ovarian activity with more follicles. The
limit for muscle-fat relation amount to 0.26. Gilts with some higher
muscle-fat-relation have a better reproduction performance than gilts
with a small fat portion in their body.
