Environmental toxins have been shown to produce harmful effects in chi
ldren, who may be exposed in the home, in public spaces, and by passiv
e contact with adults. This review discusses common toxic substances,
including lead, radon, tobacco smoke, asbestos, pesticides, mercury, c
arbon monoxide, and electric/magnetic fields. The focus is on identifi
cation, environmental abatement, and parent education. Practical sugge
stions for the primary care clinician in a community setting are empha
sized.
