SrFe2III(P2O7)(2) [strontium diiron(III) bis(diphosphate)] was prepare
d using high-temperature fusion and was found to crystallize in the tr
iclinic space group P $($) over bar$$ 1. The Fe-III atoms have distort
ed octahedral coordination geometry [average Fe-O 1.996(3) Angstrom] a
nd the Sr atoms are in sites of eightfold coordination [average Sr-O 2
.739 (3) Angstrom]. Columns of alternating Sr and Fe atoms are observe
d at x = 1/2, y = 0, whereas columns of widely separated Fe atoms are
seen at x = 0, y = 1/2.
