Abstract
The CDF collaboration at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory has rec ently announced evidence for the existence of a top quark with a mass of 174 GeV/c(2). This discovery provides us now with a completed pictu re of the matter content of the standard model of elementary particle physics. This article is aimed at providing a self-contained introduct ion to this report from a non-specialists's point of view.
