Toroidal magnetic systems offer the best opportunity to make a commerc
ial fusion power plant. They have, between them, all the features need
ed; however, no one system yet meets the ideal requirements. The tokam
ak is the most advanced system, and the proposed International Thermon
uclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) and Tokamak Physics Experiment (TPX
) will build upon the existing program to prepare for an advanced toka
mak demonstration plant. Complementary toroidal systems such as the sp
herical torus, stellarator, reversed-field pinch, field-reversed confi
guration, and spheromak offer, between them, potential advantages in e
ach area and should be studied in a balanced fusion development progra
m.
