Abstract
Transition metal borides are used for the reinforcement of B4C-based c eramics after densification by hot pressing or hot-isostatic pressing. The study of the growth mechanism of well faceted W2B5 platelets is p resented. The in-situ grown W2B5 phase shows a characteristic anisotro pic crystal growth with a distinct subgrain structure. The spontaneou cleavage behaviour of this crystal is discussed with respect to strain s in the crystal structure.
