Thermo-oxidative degradation of hydroxy-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB
) and poly(butadiene-acrylonitrile-acrylic acid) terpolymer (PBAN) bin
ders was studied in the presence of varying amounts of ammonium perchl
orate (AP). It was found that the effect of AP on the nature and compo
sition of the pyrolyzates was similar to the effect of increase in pyr
olysis temperature. Activation energy for thermal degradation was foun
d to be about 52 kJ/mol for both the polymers. The results are discuss
ed in terms of a linear pyrolysis model.
