Abstract
Gain-switched and mode-locked semiconductor lasers have been considere d as potential optical soul ces for the generation of microwave and mi llimetre-wave signals. High frequency harmonics can be obtained from t hese pulsed semiconductor lasers to transport information, overcoming the bandwidth limitation of direct and external modulation schemes. An understanding of the causes that degrade the noise performance of mic rowave harmonic signals generated by these sources is presented.
