Abstract
A dilute stream of carbon black particles was introduced into the post flame gases of premixed, high-pressure, both fuel-lean and rich ethyle ne-air laminar flames. The rate of oxidation of carbon black particles was measured using scattering and absorption techniques to determine the particle size, concentration, and number density as a function of distance and, hence, burn-off. The reactivity of the carbon black was observed to be strongly dependent upon the total pressure in fuel-lean flame, while no such dependence was noted for rich flames.
