Remotely pumped post- and preamplifiers have been employed in a 423km,
2.488Gbit/s repeaterless transmission experiment with a total transmi
ssion loss of 85.1dB. The remotely pumped postamplifier providess a po
wer budget improvement of 2.95dB. The budget improvement added by the
remotely pumped preamplifier is 15.1dB. The effective sensitivity of t
he receiver, which includes a 96.5km fibre span, is -57.7dBm.
