Abstract
In this paper we analyse the decision by teachers to leave the profess ion. Our results affirm the importance of relative earnings in the ten ure and turnover decisions of teachers. The econometric modelling appr oach used yields important insights into the appropriateness of adopti ng a flexible, semi-parametric specification of the duration dependenc e structure and of the unobserved heterogeneity distribution in durati on models.
