Abstract
This article suggests some characteristics of the field of mental heal th that might explain why political scientists and public policy analy sts have evidenced little interest in the study of mental health polic y. Following a brief overview of United States mental health policy, t he author makes the case for the importance of mental health policy in quiry on grounds of both pragmatic and theoretical significance.
