This paper will discuss the real potential of BiCMOS technology in the
design of high performance analog integrated circuits (ICs) for VLSI
applications. Both system and circuit level issues will be discussed.
A basic concept for designing high-speed analog ICs in BiCMOS will be
presented. The concept is based on connecting MOS and bipolar transist
ors such that all internal nodes in the signal path have minimum imped
ance. This combined with the speed of bipolar transistors, and the lin
earity and high input impedance of MOS transistors, produces analog ci
rcuits with excellent performance which can not be achieved using bipo
lar-only or MOS-only design solutions. Several design examples includi
ng a BiCMOS IF filter and a BiCMOS four-quadrant multiplier will be pr
esented.
