Abstract
The placenta serves as thp functional boundary between the maternal an d the fetal circulations and has long been known to deliver amino acid s concentratively to the fetus.(1) The amino acid part of our early nu trition is thus effected by the net activity of various transporters. These are positioned both in the microvillous (maternal facing) and th e basal (fetal facing) membranes of the syncytiotrophoblast.(2)
