The rule of free association makes it possible for the analysand to re
shape his or her relationship to the analyst continuously while speaki
ng. The analyst, on the other hand, gains the analysand's sympathy by
sharing in his or her unconscious relationship fantasies, that is to s
ay in the context of what he/she is saying. Both parties get into an u
ncertain relationship situation and are confronted with the task of jo
ining forces to look for a new framework in which both feel confortabl
e. In this work the analyst is supported by the broader framework made
up of his or her own convictions about the professional tasks of a ps
ychoanalyst at this time.
