Abstract
Conscientious use of progesterone/progestin provides a valuable tool t o the owners of mares that exhibit undesirable behavior during estrus. A 15-day regimen of Regu-Mate(R) (altrenogest; Hoechst-Roussel Agri-V et Company, Somerville, NJ), administered 14 days after the last heat will provide a basis to develop a strategic program to minimize and/or dictate when estrus will occur. Thus the mare can be utilized for lon ger periods or in events that otherwise might be prohibitive. The net result is a performance mare that can work or compete without unantici pated heat and the related complications.
