This case provides an example of how a proximal interphalangeal joint
arthrodesis can successfully salvage a limb and return a horse to serv
iceability after trauma-induced subluxation. This surgical procedure c
an also be successfully applied to other severe orthopedic problems in
volving the proximal interphalangeal joints of horses. The disadvantag
e of this treatment modality is the extended convalescent period that
can require up to 1 year before return to soundness can be evaluated.
