We present a detailed analysis of the giant excitonic Faraday rotation
in CdTe/CdMnTe quantum wells when the laser frequency is tuned across
the excitonic resonance. This excitonic Faraday rotation effect is ve
ry well accounted for by modeling the excitonic transition with a two-
level system. The value found for the excitonic Verdet constant, 7 x 1
0(6) degrees/T/cm, is about two orders of magnitude larger than that m
easured for interband transitions in the bulk or superlattices of semi
magnetic semiconductors, making this effect attractive to study magnet
o-optical properties of single quantum wells.
