As a most favorable flat panel display for notebook Personal Computers
(PCs), 23 similar to 26 cm-diagonal Thin Film Transistor (TFT) color
Liquid Crystal Displays (LCDs) quickly developed a worldwide volume ma
rket several years. Since the debut in the notebook PC market, portabi
lity features such as weight, thickness and power consumption have bee
n continuously improved. Among them, power consumption has been primar
ily demanded for achieving longer battery life. The recent TFT-LCD mod
ule power consumption far notebook PCs decreased to around 3 W, which
is actually less than 1/3 of the first version. This paper describes t
he past and future trends in the low-power consumption technologies fo
r TFT-LCD modules of notebook PCs.
