R. Lester et Ta. Petrie, PERSONALITY AND PHYSICAL CORRELATES OF BULIMIC SYMPTOMATOLOGY AMONG MEXICAN-AMERICAN FEMALE COLLEGE-STUDENTS, Journal of counseling psychology, 42(2), 1995, pp. 199-203
Although eating disorders have been the focus of much research, the in
clusion of minority populations in such investigations has been minima
l. Thus, the purpose of this study was to examine personality and phys
ical correlates of bulimic symptomatology in a sample of Mexican Ameri
can female college students. Hierarchical regression analysis revealed
that body mass and endorsement of U.S. societal values concerning att
ractiveness were related positively to bulimic symptomatology, account
ing for a combined 38% of the variance. Age, body satisfaction, and ac
culturation level, however, were unrelated to bulimic symptoms. Implic
ations for counseling interventions as well as directions for future r
esearch are discussed.
