The tourist implications of the development and expansion of Closer Ec
onomic Relations (CER) are examined in this paper which begins by revi
ewing the formation and expansion of the agreement and the opportuniti
es and limitations of a free trade area for tourism. The characteristi
cs of trans-Tasman tourism and how these might be influenced by CER ar
e then considered. The major outcome is seen to lie in the development
of a single aviation market but some of the assumptions which underly
the perceived benefits of further integration are challenged by an an
alysis of the impacts of mono- and multi-destination visitors.
