A mathematical model for a refining process is presented. The model pr
edicts pulp properties (freeness, long-fiber content, and shive conten
t) and handsheet properties (burst index, tensile index, tear index, a
nd light-scattering coefficient) based on refiner operating conditions
and process disturbances. The operating conditions include transfer-s
crew speed (production rate), refiner closing pressure (specific energ
y), and dilution flow rate (consistency). The process disturbances inc
lude variations in chip bulk density and moisture content. The model a
lso considers the effects of refining intensity and refining power on
pulp and handsheet properties.
