By comparing properties of various kinds of active galactic nuclei, of
their host galaxies and of their environments, a conclusion is made a
bout impossibility to explain the observed great variety of AGN by var
iations of radio jet orientation with respect to the line of sight and
/or by variations of radio jet relativism (the ''unified scheme''). It
concerns particularly the nature of the progenitors of BL Lac-like ob
jects and radio-loud quasars, namely of radiogalaxies of FRI and FRII
types, correspondingly. A new ''extended unified scheme'' is proposed.
