Abstract
A rigorous three-dimensional theoretical description of the two-wave m ixing processes in cubic crystals is presented. The theory includes li near birefringence, self-diffraction, and optical activity. Comparison s have been made with previously developed theories that use the parax ial approximation, and significant deviations have been observed. It i s shown that in the case of two-wave mixing in Bi12SiO20 for grating f ringe spacings below 0.4 mum the exact model that we describe should b e used.
